Here’s What We Know to Score the Most Candy (and Fun)
Oct. 30 - Holbrook High School Homecoming Trunk or Treat. Usually one of the largest in town. Starts at 6:30, but the flyer encourages the line to start at 6:00pm. Located at the HHS parking lot area.
Oct. 30 - Navajo County Sherriff’s office Trunk or Treat. Located at the Sherriff’s Office (137 W. Arizona St.) from 5-7pm.
Oct. 31 - Holbrook Spooktacular. 5-8pm At the Fairgrounds in Martinez Hall. There are often games and many interactive booths. Don’t forget the costume contest! Volunteers are always needed and wanted!
Oct. 31 - The Youngs’ Great Halloween Stop. On Halloween the (Merrill) Young household generously gives away pulled pork sandwiches, hotdogs, and candy all for Free! Um…that’s incredible. Open to everyone at 201 Encanto Dr. This will be the 4th time they’ve done this for the community. How cool! I’ll be there!
Summary of the Last City Council Meeting
Call from the public: We had two individuals that both covered the water station by the splash pad/city hall. They expressed concern and expressed their shock and the lack of advertising regarding the water restrictions. (Reminder: That water station was damaged and broken into and has been much more restricted since. Now those wanting to use it have to go inside city hall and request for it to be unlocked.)
Leasing land to the Sherriff’s Posse: It was unanimously approved to have the city manager and appropriate staff oversee a leasing agreement with the Sherriff’s posse.
Bulk Water Station: Finance Director Randy Sullivan detailed that water to Sun Valley and other areas has not been shut off, nor has access to the water station, it just now requires city hall employees to go out and unlock it when a customer arrives. Mr. Sullivan also explained how a quote is soon to be shown to City Council as they look to add a different water station near the transfer area (and will remove the water station from the splash pad area). More details on this in a future meeting.
Contract with Aldridge Consulting: Aldridge Consulting will conduct “audits” (There is another term for it, but this is how I understand it) on Holbrook businesses and will see if there is anything needing to be paid to the city. The city has used a similar service to this in the past and it successfully brought in revenue when last implemented.
City Hall Roof Repair: City Council was provided with 3 different quotes, but all three had a difference in price, services offered, and presentation. City Council voted to table the decision and requested the estimates quote the same services but also provide a specific time line of when the services will be rendered.
Report from the Mayor: The mayor thanked Mr. Martinez for helping keep Holbrook clean. Nice! The mayor was also impressed with this relationship we have with a French boarding school. They taught us a lot about the French geologist that studied the area. They gifted the city a picture of France. Mayor announced that December 2nd at 6pm, Holbrook will have the Annual Christmas Tree Lighting at Gillespie Park.
Report from the Vice Mayor and Council: Vice Mayor Nilsson talked about the Food Box Giveaway. Holbrook’s Food Bank plans to give out 140 holiday food boxes this year on December 21 from 9-11am. To receive a food box, an application needs to be filled out which can be picked up at the Food Bank. This helps make sure there are enough supplies for those that are in need.
Councilwoman Pack mentioned she’s looking forward to the Parade of Lights. Councilman Dixon expressed his concern about the Gillespie Park parking lot - the Sherriff’s Office uses that space and that can be intimidating for visitors. Dixon encouraged a discussion about reserved parking. Dixon also expressed that he’ll be voting against Prop 139. Councilwoman Tafoya reminded us about the Drug-free red ribbon walk and encouraged residents to see the Homecoming parade on November 1.
Report from the City Manager:
The City manager had meetings regarding: A potential drag racing track in Holbrook, Clenera Solar, the rebranding of Holbrook, we got a $5000 grant to help with local events (Christmas tree lighting and Rt. 66 event), has met with the sheriff regarding Gillespie Park’s parking lot situation, and gave kudos to multiple City Hall employees who have helped with this difficult water situation going on.
